The Secretary Bird: Africa's Snake-Stomping Raptor
Standing nearly four feet tall on crane-like legs, the secretary bird (Sagittarius serpentarius) is one of Africa's most unusual birds of prey, famous for its deadly hunting technique of stomping venomous snakes to death with powerful kicks that deliver five times its own body weight in force. Unlike other raptors that hunt from the air, this terrestrial bird stalks the grasslands on foot, covering up to 20 miles per day in search of prey, using its long legs to keep its body safely away from striking snakes. The bird's distinctive black head feathers, which resemble quill pens tucked behind a clerk's ear, inspired its common name—a reference to 18th-century secretaries who stored writing implements in their wigs.
