The Tardigrade: The Indestructible Micro-Animal That Survives Space

The tardigrade, or water bear (phylum Tardigrada), is a microscopic eight-legged creature measuring just 0.5mm that can survive conditions that would obliterate nearly any other life form on Earth. These remarkable invertebrates can withstand temperatures from near absolute zero to 300°F, pressures six times greater than the deepest ocean trenches, and even the vacuum of space without protective equipment. When conditions become harsh, tardigrades enter a state called cryptobiosis, expelling 99% of their water and essentially suspending all metabolic processes—they've been revived after remaining in this death-like state for over 30 years. Scientists have even confirmed that tardigrades survived after being fired from a high-speed gun, making them the toughest known animals in the universe.
