The Hoatzin: The Punk Rock Bird That Smells Like Manure
The hoatzin (Opisthocomus hoazin), found in the swamps and riverine forests of the Amazon and Orinoco basins, is perhaps the world's strangest bird. Unlike any other bird, hoatzins are folivores that ferment leaves in an enlarged crop using bacterial fermentation—essentially making them the avian equivalent of a cow, complete with a distinctive barnyard odor that has earned them the nickname 'stinkbird.' Even more remarkably, hoatzin chicks are born with two functional claws on each wing, which they use to climb through branches and even swim if they fall into water, a trait that disappears as they mature. This prehistoric-looking bird with its spiky crest and blue facial skin is so evolutionarily unique that scientists have debated its classification for decades, with some considering it the sole survivor of an ancient bird lineage that split off over 60 million years ago.
